The competition reached the seventh edition this year, and gained several premieres during the two stages.

Local stage

The competition took place on 9th of May 2014, in the hallway of the newest Library of Polytechnic University of Bucharest and it also introduced a new challenge- Maze. Among the five well known challenges, Mega Sumo, Mini Sumo, Micro Sumo, Football and Line Follower Enhanced, the Maze challenge provided entertainment and fully tested the robots’ abilities.

What is Maze?

The contestants may build a robot able to manage by itself a maze, and for the competition to be more difficult, the two robots will enter simultaneously in the maze, and the first one to solve it will be declared winner. The dimensions must be within 10x10 cm and they must have a Start/Stop module, for an easier management from the referee.

71 one teams signed in for the local phase: 6 teams for Mega Sumo, 15 for Mini Sumo, 8 for Micro Sumo, 7 for Maze, 24 in Line Follower Enhanced, 4 in Football and 7 for the Project Showcase. These teams competed with 92 robots in all 7 challenges of the competition.

After many rounds, lots of emotions and tension, the winners were as follows:

The prizes were offered by our partners: Infineon, Microchip, Bitdefender, IBM, Tymbark, 6th District City Hall. The trophies and medals were offered by DDB Design, and the streaming by Cable Systems and Giurgiu TV.

National phase

On the 1st and 2nd of November 2014, another first was marked at the National Stage of Robochallenge Romania. For the first time in the competition’s history we had international participation, namely 2 teams from Mexico, which also won prizes in the Mini Sumo Competition.

During the two days of competition, 81 teams battled in the 6 challenges and the Project Showcase. There were 182 robots in the competition, which offered a great show at the three Sumo Challenges (Mega Sumo, Mini Sumo and Micro Sumo), at Football, Maze, Line Follower Enhanced and Project Showcase. The robots’ abilities and the teams’ creativity were tested by the 7 challenges.

Even if most of the teams faced mechanical and/ or coding issues, they managed to compete with the robots that won several prizes, making the effort worth.

At the end of the competition, the winners received prizes offered by our sponsors: de: Infineon, Microchip, Bitdefender, JTI, Brainspotting, Heineken, LaserMaxx and the Faculty of Electronics, Telecommunications and Information Technology. The trophies and medals were offered by Atelier 13 and the promotional items by Lexivo promotional, the streaming by Cable Systems and Giurgiu TV.
